SUPPORT THE FUTURE OF SCIENCE IN SERVICE TO SOCIETY

At SCi, we believe science should work for the public good. Your contribution directly empowers scientists to engage with communities, inform public policy, and create evidence-based solutions to society’s most pressing challenges. From training scientists in public engagement to embedding science advisors in state government, your support drives meaningful change.

“[The SCi Statehouse Fellowship] experience has solidified my interest in a science policy career and has given me confidence that I can succeed in a science policy fellowship or job.”

YOUR IMPACT

Since 2018, SCi has been dedicated to strengthening the connection between science and society. We launched our first programs in 2020 at Harvard University, where we spent four years refining our vision and developing impactful initiatives. During that time, we created a portfolio of transformative classroom trainings and pioneered a summer fellowship program that empowered scientists to directly serve their communities.

Through these efforts, we have reached and inspired hundreds of scientists, equipping them with the skills to engage ethically and effectively with diverse communities. We have also placed those scientists in service to society through SCi’s fellowship programs. Over four years, SCi has placed 17 fellows in 10 Massachusetts legislative offices and 3 Boston-area community organizations. Our fellows helped shape policy on critical issues such as ocean acidification, renewable energy, public health, and internet privacy. They also developed educational programs for summer youth programs and assessed the impact of COVID-19 on vulnerable populations.

Your support will help us expand these efforts and empower a new generation of scientists to serve society through public policy and civic engagement.

OUR WORK

We partner with organizations, funders, and communities to advance civic science and create a more societally engaged and impactful scientific culture.

We help organizations build new civic science initiatives from the ground up.

We design simulation-based curricula to teach scientists how to engage ethically engage with their communities.

We offer workshops that equip scientists with tools for effective civic leadership and community engagement.

We provide opportunities for scientists to serve communities and for communities to inform science.

“This course changed my life and the way I think about research and how it can best serve the rest of society. It taught me the importance of having true equal partnership between scientists, ethicists, members of communities served by research, and more. I see every day now the way I think differently about many aspects of my work and my relationships to individuals and communities. And behind this shift in my worldview and ways of thinking, there is a huge amount of concrete knowledge and examples that I learned from this course.

Invest in Organizational Growth

Help us expand our reach and impact by funding SCi’s operational growth. Contributions to this fund will support our capacity-building efforts, such as developing new partnerships, expanding our fellowship offerings, and building the internal infrastructure necessary to scale our programs nationwide.

Launch the Massachusetts Science and Technology Policy Fellowship (MASTPF)

Be part of a transformative initiative to embed scientific expertise directly into state-level policy making. By funding the launch of the Massachusetts Science and Technology Policy Fellowship (MASTPF), you will enable highly skilled STEM PhDs to serve as nonpartisan advisors in the Massachusetts State House, providing lawmakers with critical, evidence-based insights on today’s most pressing issues—from climate change to public health to technological innovation. Learn more about the MASTPF.

Sponsor a Civic Science Clinic Summer Fellow

By sponsoring a summer fellow in the Civic Science Clinic (CSC), you can provide a transformative opportunity for a STEM graduate student to apply their scientific expertise in service to the public. Your support will allow a fellow to work part-time over the summer, addressing real-world challenges alongside policymakers or community organizations. Whether working on issues like climate change, public health, or social justice, your sponsorship will help develop the next generation of scientists committed to public service while giving them invaluable hands-on experience. Learn more about the CSC.

Create Open Access Training Materials

Your support can help make high-quality science communication and policy training accessible to all. By funding the development of open access training materials, you will empower scientists across the globe to engage with communities, inform public policy, and lead efforts to address societal challenges. These resources will provide invaluable skills for STEM professionals to communicate their expertise effectively and ethically, making science more inclusive and impactful in solving real-world problems. Try an open access training.
