SCi is excited to share the release a report by Research!America entitled: “Recommended strategies to integrate public engagement and civic science training into graduate STEMM education.” SCi Co-Director, Dr. Daniel Pomeroy, served as an adviser on this project, contributing his expertise to the discussions and the development of recommendations.

Recommended strategies to integrate public engagement and civic science training into graduate STEMM education

The recommendations are the result of a Public Engagement Working Group, convened by Research!America and led by co-chairs Alan Leshner, CEO Emeritus of AAAS, and Keith Yamamoto, Professor Emeritus and Vice Chancellor for Science Policy and Strategy at UCSF. The group brought together leaders from academia and philanthropy to develop strategies that equip future scientists to engage in mutual learning with the public and ensure scientific research is accessible and responsive to societal needs.

The report outlines several strategic actions for academic institutions, federal funders, and philanthropic organizations, aimed at making civic science training a fundamental part of graduate education. Dr. Pomeroy’s role in advising on this project reflects SCi’s commitment to fostering a more engaged and socially responsive scientific community. By contributing to the development of these recommendations, SCi is actively working to advance its mission of making science more societally engaged and impactful.

The project was directed by Jenny Luray, Senior Vice President, Strategy and Public Engagement, Research!America.  For more information, you can contact her: jluray@researchamerica.org
