OPEN ACCESS LEARNING

At SCi, we recognize that for science to truly benefit society, scientists must be equipped with more than technical expertise—they must also be trained in public communication, ethics, and policy engagement. However, many STEM PhD programs lack these critical components. To fill this gap, SCi is developing open-access training materials that will empower scientists across the globe with the skills to communicate effectively, engage ethically, and drive real-world change.

PROVEN MODEL

At SCi, we have a strong track record of developing innovative, accessible training tools that equip scientists to engage with the public and address the ethical complexities of their work.

Our Gene Drive Simulation is one such example, providing students with an immersive experience in which they examine the ethical considerations of developing gene drive technology. Complete with instructor guides and all necessary materials, this simulation allows educators to facilitate meaningful discussions on real-world ethical dilemmas.

We’ve also developed the CRISPR Online Learning Module, an open-access resource that allows students to step into the shoes of a scientific researcher developing CRISPR-based therapies. Through this simulation, participants are faced with critical decisions about their research agenda and public engagement, highlighting the ethical complexity of biomedical research.

These proven models serve as a foundation for our open-access curriculum development efforts, demonstrating SCi’s ability to create impactful learning experiences that bring science, ethics, and public engagement to the forefront.

IMPACT

SCi’s commitment to accessible, ethics-focused science education has already made a significant difference. Through the development of the Gene Drive Simulation and CRISPR Online Learning Module, hundreds of students and educators have engaged with complex real-world dilemmas in science and policy. These tools have been used to foster critical thinking and spark important conversations in classrooms across the country. Our training workshops have equipped scientists with the skills to navigate public engagement, communication, and ethical decision-making. These resources have proven effective in helping scientists bridge the gap between research and societal impact, making science more inclusive and responsive to public needs.

OPPORTUNITY: SUPPORT OPEN-ACCESS LEARNING

By supporting the creation of open-access training materials, you can help make these transformative learning experiences available to scientists and educators around the world. By making these materials freely available, we aim to democratize access to civic science training, ensuring that more scientists have the opportunity to serve society beyond the lab. Whether it’s through simulations, online modules, or interactive toolkits, these resources will foster a new generation of scientists capable of addressing the most pressing societal challenges. Your support will ensure that these vital training materials are available to all, regardless of institutional resources.
